Mark's Inspiration for this Series

Va'a, canoe, pirogue, a man's vehicle of the sea, his means of access to those remote places of the earth, his transport for family and wares, his vessel for gathering the reefs bounty. The canoe is man's homage to the sea.

I paddled my first canoe in the islands of Palau where I spent part of my childhood in that period between boyhood and youth. The canoe extended my range and allowed me to explore a vast world. It is an indelible memory.

I still paddle canoes today as a competitor for sport, crossing vast areas of water for the good of fitness and triumph.
