Mark's Inspiration for this Series

Garden Island
There is a quietness to the jungle at times that permeates your being. It has a calming effect that slows the pace of seeing. As you slow to look you begin to see things you didn't see before. Through discovery, the process of looking again matures into observation.

Kauai is abundantly lush and gifted with a riot of color and diversity. Wildlife weaves itself within it and emerges for a moment frozen before it vanishes again. This place is well deserving of its title as the Garden Island.

Flora
Close up, patterns emerge, a complexity of design, color, light, and dimensions; these are the plants around us.

I love the contrast: the quiet subject, soothing and calm against a dynamic chaos of light and color.

The Ti plant and the croton plants particularly fascinate me because of their audacious, improbable color. There are bursts of light and design. As I paint, I will deliberately contrast their explosive, hot fire like qualities with the cool receding blues and greens of water and foliage.
